Give your dog physically stimulating exercises.
The daily exercise requirement will vary depending on your dog’s breed, age, health and overall activity level. You can judge that on a daily basis with your dog. In general, dogs from the herding, sporting or working groups may need more regular exercise than dogs from the toy group. Some dogs will be happy with long walks and varying terrain, while others may need full Frisbee and tennis ball tossing sessions, and still others thrive on daily visits to dog parks where they can play with their friends. Your dog’s age is a major difference in his exercise requirement. As your dog’s body ages and changes, what they enjoyed doing or at the level of intensity they are used to may change, or you may have to change it for them. For example, if your dog always loved to catch Frisbees and chase tennis balls, but now they are older and more susceptible to injuries, it may not be wise to continue with this past pattern. You may want to switch to long walks or other less demanding forms of exercise.
Give your dog mind stimulating exercises.
All dogs love to play games and learn new things, and you can wear out your dog just by exercising your dog’s mind. A simple way to do this is to teach your dog a variety of tricks that can be practiced and performed in the house with minimal space. Working on learning a new trick just for a few minutes at a time can wear a dog out for several hours.
Remember: A Tired Dog is A Good Dog.
The more you can exhaust your dog, the less time he will have to become bored and anxious which result in barking and destruction. If your dog is so tired when you leave them along, they will sleep rather than becoming destructive.
